Tioman, Genting Highlands tourism bubble put on hold
The Star Online • September 29, 2021
According to Tourism Pahang general manager Kamaruddin Ibrahim, the Tioman Island and Genting Highlands tourism bubble, which was set to commence on October 1, has been postponed indefinitely.
He claimed the action was in response to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's announcement that the reopening of island resorts and tourism centers or destinations, as well as inter-state travel, would be permitted only when the country's adult population's vaccination rate reached 90%.
"Following this, only Pahang citizens are permitted to visit state tourism attractions while complying with stringent standard operating procedures (SOPs). We advise that out-of-state visitors who have already made bookings contact the tour operators for guidance, whether to postpone their trip or not "He stated.
Kamaruddin told reporters this on Tuesday (Sept 28) after inspecting the execution of the SOPs in Tioman Island at the Teluk Gading (previously known as Tanjung Gemuk) ferry jetty terminal, the resort island's major entry point. After Langkawi in Kedah, the Tourism, Arts, and Culture Ministry recommended that three other locations, including Genting Highlands, Tioman Island, and Melaka, be reopened to visitors under the domestic tourism bubble.
In terms of the application of SOPs in Tioman Island, Kamaruddin stated that among the SOPs enforced were that visitors must be completely vaccinated and present the results of their separate Covid-19 screening tests before boarding the boat.
He stated that if tourists wanted to do their Covid-19 test, they may buy the kit at the jetty or elsewhere, but the test had to be performed at the jetty terminal.
"Individuals who had the test done in a clinic must provide the test result for verification before boarding the boat."
"Having passed the test will give tour companies confidence to welcome tourists," he added.
In conjunction with Pahang's transition to Phase Three of the National Recovery Plan (PPN), he anticipated that citizens of the state would assist strengthen the sector, which had been severely impacted by the Covid-19 epidemic.
"With the transition to Phase Three, many activities have been eased, and inter-district travel is now permitted." As a result, I hope that more people will visit the numerous attractive locations in the state, such as Janda Baik, Rompin State Park, and others,” he added. - Bernama
